The Lady Mountaineers celebrate after Bailey Smith (center, in helmet) hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat Buffalo Gap 1-0, advancing the team to the regional finals.

Bailey Smith hit a walk-off home run in the eighth inning to propel the Madison County softball team to a 3-2 victory over Buffalo Gap in the Region 2B semifinals last Wednesday. The win secured a trip to the Class 2 state tournament for the third straight year for the Mountaineers, but the Bison made them earn it.

After Buffalo Gap took an early 1-0 lead on a solo home run in the first inning, Madison tied the game on a Sophie Adams sacrifice fly in the fourth. The Bison took the lead again in the fifth and again Adams had the answer for MCHS with an RBI single to tie the game at 2-2 and set up Smith’s extra-inning heroics.

Following the semifinal win, Madison went up against Page, falling 5-0. As the Region B Runner-Up, Madison was scheduled to visit Amelia County for a 5 p.m. game Tuesday. The winner of that game will play Friday at 10 a.m. at Radford University with the championship game Saturday.

UPDATE: Due to inclement weather, state games have been moved to June 13-14. Times have not been announced.
