The University of Virginia Health System will work with the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation over the next five years to provide more than $1 million in grants to area nonprofits.

In each of those years, the UVa Health System will disburse $250,000 in grant money.

Three application opportunities will be available over the next six months.

The first, “Shaping Futures,” focuses on improving community health, particularly through healthy eating, activity, addressing mental health and substance abuse and improving access to health care.

Applications for the first round of grants will be accepted through July 1.
