A Charlottesville man was shot and killed along the Rivanna River Trail on Thursday night. On Friday, police arrested a suspect and charged him with second-degree murder.

Cody Jason Cappel, 24, was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds at about 8 p.m. Thursday behind Peter Jefferson Parkway in Albemarle County.

Detectives suspect that Allan Ray Via, 49, killed Cappel, saying that the two appear to be acquaintances who lived in tents near the trail. Via, of Charlottesville, was arrested Friday and was charged with second-degree murder and possessing ammunition as a convicted felon.

Albemarle police say additional criminal charges are pending against Via, and they said in a news release that the shooting is being treated as an isolated incident.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Albemarle Detective Mark Belew at (434) 296-5807.
