Garland McLeod "Mac" Canter Jr., 84, of Charlottesville, died peacefully at the Center for Acute Hospice Care on Tuesday, November 26, 2019. Born September 22, 1935, in Winchester, Va., he was preceded in death by his parents, Garland M. and Joanna Canter. Mac spent most of his early life in Berryville, Va., where he graduated from Clarke County High School. He received his B.S. degree from Lynchburg College and M. Ed degree from the University of Virginia. Mac taught middle and elementary school and was an elementary principal in Lynchburg. In 1973, he returned to the University of Virginia for more graduate work and moved the family in 1974 to Charlottesville where he began working with Albemarle County Schools in administration. After retiring in 1990, Mac enjoyed teaching current and student teachers and working with schools selling World Book where he made numerous friends when he and Kay were not traveling on their many adventures. Faith has always been important to Canters. Mac utilized his organizational skills in churches both in Lynchburg and the First United Methodist Church in Charlottesville in various leadership positions. He also served in the church's "soup kitchen" and valued the friendships he made through his weekly men's group which met for many years. Family gatherings were a significant part of their lives. From an early age, Mac enjoyed spending time with his large extended family. Mac and Kay continued this tradition with their children and grandchildren. Mac is survived by Katherine "Kay" Canter, his wife of 54 years; son, Doug Canter (April); daughter, Katherine Tucker (Tyler); grandchildren, Kira, Kevin, and Sierra Canter, and Cora Knott (Toby). He is also survived by his sister, Joan Dellinger (George); niece, Dawn Buckley (Gary); nephews, Jimmy Dellinger(Shelly), and Will Dellinger (Kathleen); and many cousins. A celebration of life is scheduled for Sunday, December 1, 2019, at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Charlottesville. The family will receive friends before the service at 1 p.m. A reception will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the First United Methodist Church Charlottesville, The Alzheimer's Association, or Hospice of the Piedmont. The Reverend Anne Scupholme CNM passed away on Saturday, November 23, 2019. Anne was born on May 3, 1942 in Whitby, England. She was educated at Casterton School and completed her nursing training in London and midwifery training in Manchester. In 1968, she travelled to Jamaica, West Indies and in 1969 arrived in Miami, Florida where she worked as a nurse-midwife until her retirement in 2003, spending over 31 years at the University of Miami / Jackson Memorial Medical Center. She completed an undergraduate degree in religious studies at Florida international University and a graduate degree in public health from the University of Miami. Anne was one of the pioneers for the practice of nurse-midwifery in Florida and an active leader in the independent birth center movement as an alternative to traditional hospital birth settings. She worked tirelessly as ardent advocate for improved health care for women and children and those on the margins of society. Anne was inducted as a member into the Hall of Fame of the University of Miami School of Medicine / Jackson Women's Hospital center in 2007 in recognition for exemplary contributions in the field of women's health. In 1998, Anne was ordained as a deacon in Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, Miami where she served on staff for 5 years. In 2003, Anne relocated to Charlottesville, Virginia, where she continued to work as a licensed deacon serving in several Episcopal parishes, and was an active member of the diocesan committee that initiated the first training program for deacons in the Diocese of Virginia. She continued to serve and advocate for justice for disadvantaged people in rural Albemarle until her death. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank may be made in her memory. Anne is survived by her sister, Margaret Beaujeux and her husband, Paul. Another sister, Barbara Huckell, preceded Anne in death. A Memorial Eucharist will be held at Buck Mountain Episcopal Church, Earlysville, Va. in January 2020. Later, her ashes will be scattered in the churchyard of Christ Church, Ugthorpe, England, the church in which she was baptized.
William Clifford Stimmel, 72, resident of Region 10 community, died on Tuesday, November 26, 2019, at the University of Virginia Medical Center. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, December 3, 2019, at Teague Funeral Home, 2260 Ivy Rd, Charlottesville. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens.
