Charlottesville police officials said Monday that they are investigating a suspicious death from last week as a homicide.
Police identified the victim as 55-year-old Richard Wayne Edwards. He was found dead Thursday in his apartment at 1100 Cherry St. in the Belmont neighborhood.
Police did not say how Edwards was killed but said the Virginia Medical Examiner’s Office has ruled the death a homicide.
“The circumstances surrounding the homicide are not being released at this time,” said Tyler Hawn, police spokesman. “This is still a very active investigation. We do not believe there is any threat to the larger community, and believe this to be an isolated incident.”
Hawn said police were not releasing information at this time about a possible suspect.
