Body in Moores Creek

Police hang a tarp in front of the scene where the body of a white man was discovered in Moores Creek near the 5th Street Station Exxon Mobile gas station on July 31.

The body of a white man was found in Moores Creek by Wegmans on Tuesday afternoon, according to the Charlottesville Police Department.

Police are not releasing the identity of the deceased while his family is contacted. A cause of death has not been announced.

Sgt. Tony Newberry said the body was not that of 53-year-old Samuel Lee Houchens, who was last seen at his Meridian Street home on June 20.

The body was found by Donald Neumeister, who works at the 5th Street Hardee's restaurant next to the creek.

During his break, Neumeister and his friends were looking for fish in the creek and decided to walk to the other side of the bridge, which doesn’t have a walkway, to see what the creek looked like.

After crossing the road, Neumeister spotted the body and called police.

“It’s certainly not what I expected to see,” he said. “I’m sad for whoever his family is and those that loved him, I hope this helps give them closure.”
