Courtney Cacatian will be the Charlottesville Albemarle Convention and Visitors Bureau’s new executive director.
Cacatian is the current executive director of the Bristol Tennessee/Virginia Convention & Visitors Bureau.
“On behalf of the CACVB Board, I extend a warm welcome to Courtney — her energy and innovative ideas for tourism will strengthen this sector of our regional economy,” Roger Johnson, CACVB board chair and Albemarle’s director of economic development, said in a news release.
In a special meeting on Wednesday, the board voted to appoint Cacatian, who is set to start Aug. 1. The board also appointed Chris Engel, the city’s economic development director and board’s vice chair, to serve as interim director for the next month.
“I feel privileged to have been selected to promote a community with so many strong assets and stories to share,” Cacatian said in the release. “I’m eager to make a positive contribution to Charlottesville and Albemarle County.”
According to an offer letter, Cacatian’s salary is $115,000, and she’ll be reimbursed for up to $5,000 for moving and relocation expenses.
“I think this is exciting,” said county Supervisor Diantha McKeel, who is a board member, when the board took the vote.
The hire comes about a year and a half after the county and city elected officials wanted a new board to oversee the bureau and that included elected officials.
The prior executive director, Kurt Burkhart, retired in May 2018. Former CACVB Director of Sales and Marketing Brigitte Bélanger-Warner served as acting executive director for about a month after Burkhart left.
Adam Healey served as interim executive director for almost a year, and often told the board that the organization and advertising of the area was underfunded.
The board on Wednesday also approved a renewal and amendment of the CACVB’s contract with Clean, an advertising agency, which included an additional $45,000 for a minimum of 20 additional short promotional videos of local businesses and activities.
