The Better Business Bureau, Clearpoint Credit Counseling and International Paper are partnering for Secure Your ID Day.
From 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 19 at American National University on U.S. 29 in northern Albemarle County, residents and small businesses can take advantage of free shredding and disposal of sensitive documents and CDs. Documents to be shredded should be removed from binders, but staples and paper clips are OK.
BBB staff will also be on site to provide advice and tips to protect against identity theft.
“Properly destroying documents is an important first step in fighting identity theft,” said Tom Gallagher, president and CEO of the BBB in Central Virginia.
“Identity theft is largely a crime of access,” said Gallagher. “Our goal here is to make the information less accessible and empower people to be their own first line of defense against identity theft.”
