A University of Virginia School of Law professor has been named the next solicitor general of Virginia.

Toby Heytens, a 2000 graduate of UVa’s law school, was selected for the post by state Attorney General Mark Herring.

Heytens succeeds Acting Solicitor General Trevor Cox, who will be returning to private practice after four years of service, according to a news release from Herring’s office.

Heytens will take a leave of absence from his professorship for the duration of his term, according to a news release from the university. His appointment will take effect Feb. 21.
