STUARTS DRAFT — Stuarts Draft High School’s Fine Arts Department will bring “Newsies” to life this weekend. The Disney Broadway hit will be performed Thursday through Sunday.

Draft’s musical is based on the 1992 movie and inspired by a true story. Newsboy Jack Kelly dreams of a better life away from the hardships of the streets. When prices are raised for the newsies, Kelly rallies fellow workers to go on strike.

The show has more than 50 people involved, including a live orchestra. Students are from SDHS and a few from Guy K. Stump Elementary School and Stuarts Draft Middle School.

Brooke Crittenden, sophomore, plays Katherine, a news reporter working with the newsies. She’s been acting since fifth grade.

“It’s been awesome,” she said of working on the show. “We’re a really close family. The show is really important. [It teaches] fight for what you believe in and stand up for what’s right.”

Logan Hartsook, senior, playing Jack Kelly, has been in the SDHS drama program all four years of his high school career. He hopes to go to New York or attend James Madison University for acting.

“[The audience] will love the story, the music, the dancing and see all of the hard work we’ve put into it,” Hartsook said.

Jesse Forloines, senior, agreed.

“If [cast members] have a minor or major character, everyone has put a lot of work in this show,” he said.

The show runs Thursday, March 7 through Sunday, March 10. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, “Newsies” is at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. It will be held in the Stuarts Draft High School auditorium. Tickets are $6 for students, $10 general and $12 VIP. Tickets can be purchased online at
