A car was stolen from Waynesboro early Friday morning, which police later found with a juvenile sleeping in.
Before 7 a.m., a Waynesboro Police Department officer took a report for a stolen 2018 Volkswagen Atlas. It had been reportedly taken overnight from the Shawnee Road and Northgate Avenue area in Waynesboro.
About an hour later, the car was found running with a person in it at the South Laurel Avenue and 12th Street area.
Officers approached the stole car and found a 17-year-old juvenile asleep in the driver’s seat in possession of a gun. As they tried to wake him up, officers spotted a 40 caliber Glock handgun stuck between the driver’s seat and the center console of the vehicle.
They safely secured the firearm and the juvenile without incident.
The 17 year old is charged with a felony of possession of a stolen vehicle and misdemeanor possession of a firearm while being under 18 years of age.
He’s being held at the Shenandoah Valley Juvenile Center. This investigation is ongoing and additional charges are pending.
The Waynesboro Police Department release did not verify if the vehicle was locked or not. However, on Facebook, they made a post reminding people to “lock it or lose it.” The post encourages people to keep valuables out of sight or in the trunk, not to leave valuables in unattended vehicles, notify police of suspicious activity and always keep vehicles locked.
