The Family Fiesta series returned to Waynesboro in Frisbee style on Monday. The series, at Ridgeview Park, gives families free entertainment to enjoy on Mondays in June.
“Family Fiestas always feel like the official beginning of summer,” said Susan Roberts, superintendent of recreation at Waynesboro Parks and Recreation. “[It’s] time for families to get outside and enjoy some fun time together in the park. These events provide the perfect opportunity for that.”
The series started on Monday and goes through June 24.
“This year we will be starting off with the Frisbee Guy from Winchester,” she said. “Not only will he show kids lots of cool Frisbee tricks, he will also be teaching them how they can do it too.”
Gary Auerbach, the Frisbee Guy, won world freestyle Frisbee championships in 1995. Afterward, he began sharing his skills and telling stories at schools, camps and other kid-friendly events. His goal is to share with people the joy of the Frisbee.
On Monday, in addition to tricks, he showed the kids different Frisbees and different ways to throw them.
Family Fiesta begins at 6 p.m. at the Woodland Picnic Shelter in the park. On June 13, the Mountain Heritage Cloggers will perform. June 17 is the Wildlife Center of Virginia and June 24 will be Erin Riley, Magician of Life.
“All of the entertainment is geared toward families and offers a variety of different types of activities —hopefully, something for everyone,” Roberts said. “In addition to simply having fun, I hope the kids and families will take away a few good memories of spending enjoyable summer times together.”
