Groovin' at the Greenway has returned for the summer in Waynesboro. The live music series offers concerts, food and children’s activities every Thursday by the South River.

Groovin’ kicked off Thursday with Judy Chops and the food truck Sooner BBQ. The band’s Americana style is a fusion of modern and vintage musical styles — blending elements of swing, blues, rock and soul.

In the past, Waynesboro Parks and Recreation has offered Groovin’ and Rockin’ Ridgeview at Ridgeview Park. This year, however, both events are combined into one.

“With the arrival of our wonderful new stage along the Greenway, we wanted to better utilize that space along the river and consolidate the programs into a longer Groovin’ at the Greenway series,” said Susan Roberts, superintendent of Waynesboro Parks and Recreation. “It’s the same basic format: a variety of great music, activities for children and a food truck so you can enjoy dinner while you enjoy the music.”

Each Thursday, the Blue Ridge Children’s Museum will provide activities for families and children. Activities change per week, but include: lawn games, materials for children to dance and create their own music along with the music, a table craft and face painting.

“We love seeing more families bringing their children to the concerts,” Karen Orlando, Blue Ridge Children’s Museum director, said. “Watching the children and families playing while enjoying great music in one of Waynesboro's incredible outdoor spaces is what it is all about.”

Groovin’ is a free event for families; food truck items must be purchased. The children’s museum activities are also free, but donations are welcome.

“By providing activities for children, I hope that more families from throughout the area hear about Groovin' on the Greenway concerts, and come and see how great these concerts are,” Orlando said. “I hope that Blue Ridge Children's Museum activities help the children and families enjoy the concerts even more and help create great childhood memories for our area children.”

Concerts are on Thursdays in June and July, except July 4, from 6 to 8 p.m. For a full lineup of performers, visit
