Fredda Stowe Stone, age 93, a long-time resident of Waynesboro, Virginia, died on Tuesday, June 18, 2019, at The Memory Center in Virginia Beach, Va. She will always be remembered for her devotion to family, her friendly southern charm, her mad bridge playing skills, and her reliably positive outlook. Fredda will be interred with her husband, U.S. Army Col. (Ret.) Frank J. Stone, in Arlington National Cemetery in a private ceremony. Fredda was born on January 12, 1926, in Toccoa, Ga., to the late Fred A. Stowe and Ollie Mae Stowe née Gilbert. She grew up in Toccoa, and after high school attended Brenau College in Gainesville, Ga., briefly before marrying Frank, a Lieutenant in the 101st Airborne Division, in December 1943 in Toccoa. As an Army wife she watched Frank go off to war three times World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Along the way she moved with Frank and the children as they were stationed in Alaska, Washington, Colorado, Georgia, Utah, North Carolina, Kansas, Germany, Louisiana, Texas, New York and Maryland before settling in Waynesboro, Va. in 1973. Fredda was a devout Catholic, and a member of St. John the Evangelist Church in Waynesboro until she moved to Virginia Beach in 2016. She was preceded in death by Frank, her husband of 65 years; and a brother Walter T. Stowe. She is survived by her five children, Cheryl Ilderton and her husband, Pat, of Sullivan's Island, S.C., Jim and his wife, Emily, of Columbus, Ga., Chris and his wife, Cindy, of Virginia Beach, Va., Fred and his wife, Shirley, of Ft. Collins, Colo., and Pete and his wife Holly, of Woodstock, Va. Fredda also had 11 grandchildren, Luke Ilderton and his wife, Nicole of Denver, Colo., Sarah Mae Barker née Ilderton and her husband, Matthew, of Sullivan's Island, S.C., Adam Ilderton and his wife, Jordan, of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., David Ilderton of Monterey, Calif., Matthew Stone of Atlanta, Ga., Katie Stone of Columbus, Ga., Jennifer Norris and her husband, Jon, of Ramstein, Germany, Nick Stone of Virginia Beach, Va., Michael Stone of Denver, Colo., Samantha Stone of Ft. Collins, Colo., Taylor Stone of Ft. Collins, Colo., Zach Stone of Lubbock, Texas, Elizabeth Stone of Lubbock, Texas; and eight great-grandchildren, Julius, Gunner, and Smith Norris of Ramstein, Germany, Fleetwood, Marie, and Eleanor Ilderton of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., Hadley Ilderton of Denver, Colo., and Oscar Barker of Sullivan's Island, S.C.
