GLOUCESTER — The Riverheads girls tennis team saw its season come to an end Monday with a state semifinal loss to Rappahannock in a match played in Gloucester. The loss was a repeat of last year when the Gladiators lost to Rappahannock in the quarterfinals of state action.

The Gladiators lost their first five singles matches in straight sets to end the day with a 5-0 loss. At the number one singles, Jessica Milo fell to Laura Ambrose, 6-3, 7-5 and Emma Staton lost to Mackenzie Straughan, 6-2, 6-4 at number two.

In the third-seeded match, Rappahannock’s Reagan White topped Gracie Fulton, 6-2, 6-4, while Taylor Vaughan turned back Riverheads’ Lauren Reese, 6-3, 6-3, at number four. Rachel Hall beat Riverheads’ Lili Williams at the fifth spot, 7-5, 6-3. At the number six spot, Riverheads’ Jessica Gordon had split with Sarah Hinson, 1-6, 6-4 when the match was called.

State action does continue for the Riverheads doubles team of Milo and Reese who will play in the state semifinals on Friday at Radford University at 9 a.m.

Despite the loss in state semifinal action, Riverheads Coach Reuben Siskin was pleased with his team’s season. With the exception of Milo, who is a senior, the rest of his squad was all freshman and sophomores.

“This is a young team and we will see great things from them in the next couple of years,” he said.
