WASHINGTON — Riverheads’ Emily Walters pitched her second three-hitter in as many days Friday, sparking the Gladiators to a 10-1 romp over the top-seeded Rappahannock County Panthers in the Region 1B softball championship.
Walters’ effort came on the heels of her three-hit shutout of Central Lunenburg on Thursday, which secured the Gladiators a return visit to the Class 1 state tournament. The senior lost her bid for back-to-back shutouts in the sixth inning on a fielding error. She struck out 11.
The victory earned the Gladiators, who repeated as regional champions, a home game for the state quarterfinals on Tuesday. Riverheads (14-10) hosts Region 1A runner-up Northumberland. Game time will be announced over the weekend.
The Gladiators left no doubt as to the outcome, scoring twice in the first inning and blowing the game open with a four-run outburst in the second.
Like in the win over Central Lunenburg, Walters received plenty of offensive support. Emma Grubb had three hits and two RBIs, while Pearl Bass and Faith Christian contributed two hits and two RBIs. Riley Reed and Sydney Philips each had two hits. Freshman Cheyenne Deming had one hit and three RBIs.
