After a weekend of delays, postponements and site changes for many of its other state tournaments due to inclement weather, the Virginia High School League on Monday announced the start times for this week’s state baseball and softball semifinals and championship games.
The games were originally slated to be played on Friday and Saturday last week, but due to the inclement weather forecast, the VHSL opted to push the games back a week, with the semifinals being played on Thursday and the state championship games being played on Friday.
The Riverheads baseball team will take on Auburn on Thursday at noon in the Class 1 state semifinals at Calfee Park in Pulaski. The Gladiators advanced to the semifinals following a win over Colonial Beach in the quarterfinals.
The Riverheads-Auburn winner will advance to the state championship game on Friday at 9 a.m. at Calfee Park and face either Patrick Henry (Glade Spring) or Lancaster, who meet in Thursday’s other semifinal at 9 a.m.
The Stuarts Draft baseball team also will be in action at Calfee Park on Thursday when it faces Chatham in the Class 2 state semifinals at 6 p.m. The winner moves on to face either Lebanon or Page County in the state championship game on Friday at noon at Calfee Park. The Cougars advanced to the semifinals by topping Nandua in the quarterfinals.
Like the baseball team, the Riverheads softball team also will face Auburn in the Class 1 state semifinals on Thursday. The Gladiators and Eagles will meet at Radford University at 6 p.m., with the winner advancing to face either Northwood or Rappahannock County in the state championship game on Friday at noon at Radford University. Riverheads advanced to the state semifinals by defeating Northumberland in the quarterfinals.
