Mother Nature has thrown a curveball into this weekend’s Virginia High School League championship schedule.
Forecasted inclement weather for Friday and Saturday is having an impact on Riverheads and Stuarts Draft.
The Class 1 baseball semifinal game between Riverheads and Auburn has been moved to Thursday at Calfee Park in Pulaski.
The Riverheads softball team will meet Auburn on Thursday at Virginia Tech in the Class 1 state semifinals.
The Class 2 baseball semifinal game between Stuarts Draft and Chatham has been moved to Thursday at Calfee Park in Pulaski.
The championship game for baseball and softball will be played on June 14. Times have not been announced yet for any of the games.
While baseball and softball have been rescheduled, soccer is still on tap this weekend.
Robert E. Lee’s boys soccer team faces Giles at 9 a.m. Friday at Radford University’s Cupp Stadium in a Class 2 semifinal match. If the Leemen win, the will play in Saturday’s championship match against either George Mason or Martinsville.
This weekend is the last time a team will play under the name Robert E. Lee or have Leemen as a mascot. The Staunton School Board voted earlier this year to rename the school to the Staunton Storm, beginning July 1.
Wouldn’t it be an ironic twist if Lee, playing for the last time under its storied name, and Martinsville squared off for the state championship Saturday. The Leemen and Bulldogs have a rich history of classic clashes on the basketball court at the state level. It was Martinsville that ended Lee’s historic 85-game winning streak in the 2006 state title game.
