On Tuesday, June 4, 2019, Lewis Dillard Houchens Jr., of North Garden, Va., at the age 88, joined his Heavenly Father. He was fondly called "Jack" by his family and friends. He was the son of the late Lewis Dillard Houchens and Alice Pearce Houchens of Charlottesville, Va., and was also preceded in death by his sister, Lottie Lee Dudley. Jack is survived by the love of his life and wife of 64 years, Virginia Thomas Houchens; two sons, Robert Dale Houchens and his wife, Nancy, of North Garden, Va., and David Bryce Houchens and his wife, Susan, of North Garden, Va.; two grandchildren, Christopher Dale Houchens and his fiancée, Jenna Pitsenbarger of Bumpass, Va., and Michael Brandon Houchens and his wife, Jenny, of Smithfield; one great-grandson, Jack Randolph Houchens of Smithfield, Va.; one brother, Richard "Dick" Houchens and his wife, Mary Frances, of Lovingston, Va.; two sisters, Lois Yoho of Cape Coral, Fla., and Jean Gordner of N.C.; along with many nieces and nephews. Jack was proud to serve his country in Korea as a Corporal in the U.S. Army. Jack loved his God and was an active member of Mt. Olivet Methodist Church in North Garden, Va. where he served as an active member of the choir. Throughout the years, he served on many committees and the Administrative Council. He was proud to be the oldest living member of Mt. Olivet. Jack loved his God, his family and his friends. He was a compassionate and loving man with a great sense of humor and could always be counted on to lift your spirits and bring a smile to your face even in the toughest of times. JACK WAS LOVE and he will live forever in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 22, 2019, at 11 a.m., at Mt. Olivet Church in North Garden, Va. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the North Garden Volunteer Fire Department, 4907 Plank Rd., North Garden, VA 22959-0033.
