John Thomas Lloyd left this world on Wednesday, June 19, 2019, at home in Nelson County, Va. Born on March 5, 1945, in Hampton, Va., he was the son of the late John P. and Anne E. Lloyd, and was raised in Yorktown, Va. He graduated from York High School in 1963 and joined the U.S. Navy. After completion of basic training he was stationed at the Naval Weapons Station back in Yorktown! He and wife Frances met there in 1966. His time in the Navy changed him from a small town country boy to a worldly man who loved to travel and explore. Retirement from the Navy in May 1984 led to new adventures. He completed a degree in Accounting at Old Dominion University and obtained his CPA Certification leading to experiences in the business world from which he retired in 2014. After almost 20 years of living in Virginia Beach, John and Frances moved to the mountains of Virginia in 1997. After searching the Charlottesville area for the ideal place for their home, they settled in Roseland, Va. Both have lived there longer than any other home. The daily drive to Charlottesville for work was not a problem as there were no traffic lights on the way. John loved to travel and to tell his stories with everyone he met. His conversations usually included laughter. He had a way with words that never ended. There were never enough family gatherings or parties for him. And he was always checking out new cars or tires, an interest developed while working in his father's gas station. He volunteered his accounting services to the Rockfish Valley Foundation, as well as working on other projects there. such as trimming along the trails, building new fencing and setting up the foundation for a new storage shed. He achieved great satisfaction from helping others in this manner. His wife, Frances, of 51 years, and their sons and grandchildren survive John, Jeffrey Brian and his wife, Chrissie, and their children, Jessica M. of Des Moines, Iowa, and sons, Christopher W., Caden J. and Aiden J. of Waterford, Calif.; Gregory Allen and his wife, Yiting Wang, and daughter, Anne M. and son, Thomas J. of Gaithersburg, Md; sisters, Shirley Tiernan of Newport News, Barbara German of Williamsburg, and Judith Waites of Lovingston also survive him. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Rockfish Valley Foundation, Legacy Hospice, or to a charity of your choice. The family would like to extend their gratitude to the wonderful caring staff of Legacy Hospice, Dr. Andrew Romano, the caring nurses of the Sentara Martha Jefferson Cancer Center for their assistance and the wonderful care they provided John throughout his illness. A graveside service will be held on 1 p.m., Tuesday, July 9, 2019, at the Culpeper National Cemetery. After the service, A Celebration of John's Life will be held at Mountain Run Winery, Culpeper.
