It is with great sadness that the family of Harriet May Oakley of Ruckersville announces her passing after a sudden illness, on Friday, June 28, 2019, at the age of 87. Harriet was a loving wife, mother and friend to many. Her love for others reached far and wide as a homemaker, teachers assistant to special needs children, her community, and especially to those at The Center in Charlottesville. Harriet was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Jean E. Oakley, the love of her life. She was born on December 2, 1931, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of the late John Farquharson Dow and Hattie May Vollbracht Dow. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Donald G. Dow. Harriet will forever be lovingly remembered by two daughters, Linda Oakley-Hankins and husband, Don, of Tampa, Fla., and Barbara Stevens and Tony Jordan of Charlottesville; son, Warren Oakley of Brooksville, FL; grandson, Kyle Stevens of Charlottesville; brother, John F. Dow and wife, Betty, of Millville, N.J.; nieces and nephews, and many friends from The Center in Charlottesville.. A celebration of life service will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 2, 2019, at The Center in Charlottesville conducted by Pastor Richard Thurston. Memorial contributions may be made to The Center, 491 Hillsdale Dr., Charlottesville, VA 22901, in memory of Harriet Oakley.
