Alyson Rae Parker Sparks, 90, of Orange, Va., died on May 21, 2019. She was a proud Kiwi and a proud American. Alyson was born on January 18, 1929, in Masterton, New Zealand to the late Ellen Dever Parker and Oswald Parker. She was the wife of Edward B. Sparks who died in 2010. She also was predeceased by her brother, Ronald Gordon Parker; her sister, Rita Ellen Parker; and her sister in law, Jocelyn Parker. She is survived by her brother, Geoffrey Donald Parker; her sister-in-law, Ann Bornholdt Parker, and 14 nieces and nephews, and their families, living in the United States and Zealand. Alyson spend her working career as a nurse in a number of countries throughout the world, including New Zealand, South Vietnam, England, Spain and the United States. She moved to Orange in 1973 and worked at the Culpeper Memorial Hospital and the Orange County Nursing Home for a number of years. After her retirement she lived in Orange and spent much of her time volunteering. The family will receive visitors at Preddy Funeral Home in Orange on Saturday, June 8, 2019, from 3 and 5 p.m. A private graveside service will be held at a later date. The family would like to thank the staff of Dogwood Village of Orange County Senior Living for her care and friendship over the past 6 years, and thank the doctors, nurses and employees of both the NH UVA Culpeper Medical Center and Hospice of the Piedmont for her care in her final days.
