John Joseph "Skip" Tornatore, III, 78, of Charlottesville, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 12, 2018, at the University of Virginia Medical Center, in the loving arms of his wife and surrounded by family and friends. Born on February 22, 1940, in Albany, New York, he was the son of the late John Joseph Tornatore, Jr., and Helen Grace Harlow Tornatore. He was also predeceased by his step-mother, Clarice Tornatore. Skip graduated from the Miller School of Albemarle and served in the U.S. Navy. He worked in the family business, Helen and John's Grocery, in Woolen Mills, for over 40 years, taking over the operation after his father retired. After closing the business in 2001, Skip worked for over 10 years at Sam's Club as a greeter, making good use of his natural gifts and bringing smiles to the children he met. Skip enjoyed music and dancing, furry animals, serving others at work, at church, and in his community. He was kind and gentle, a hard-working man who loved all people, especially children. He touched many lives. He was a longtime member and deacon of Calvary Baptist Church and enjoyed being a part of the Point Church in Charlottesville since its beginning eight years ago. Skip was a firm believer in Jesus Christ and his faith was evident in how he lived, and how he faced his many medical challenges for over 30 years of his life. He received excellent care from many physicians and nurses at UVA and, despite his health issues, kept a positive attitude. The family wishes to thank Dr. Karen Maughan and the Family Medicine team at UVA, Dr. John Densmore and the Emily Couric Cancer Center staff, Dr. Sula Mazimba and the Cardiology Department, Craig Thomas, N.P., and home nurse Lorraine Pike and many other care givers. Special thanks goes to family members, Jeff, Nat, Margaret and Betty, who cared for him at home over the last six weeks of his life. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Laura Nadine Tornatore; three daughters, Wendy Haney (Mike), Missy Hyatt (Nat), and Melanie Williams (Nathan); seven grandchildren he adored, Austin and Ashley Haney, Caleb Gunther and Kim Hyatt, Sean Williams (Heather), and Jessica and Katelyn Williams; one dearly loved great granddaughter, Skylar Dawn; one sister, Tina Davis of Florida; his maternal aunt, Mary Strazza, his loving Italian family in Albany, New York, many foster siblings who his parents cared for over the years, and members of Clarice Tornatore's family. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, March 17, 2018, at Christ Community Church, 329 Riverside Avenue, Charlottesville, Va., with a reception following. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
