Ann May Via Ann May Via, 81, died peacefully on Friday, March 7, 2014, at her home, Hob Knob Farm in Free Union, Virginia. Born on March 2, 1933, in Norfolk, Virginia, Ann was the daughter of William Peyton May and Elizabeth Marshall May. Ann is survived by her adoring husband of 61 years, Harold A. "Sonny" Via Jr.; son, Peyton A. Via of Virginia Beach; son, Michael A. Via and Debbie of Virginia Beach; daughter, Alice R. Via of Virginia Beach; daughter, Mary V. Cuoco and Mark of New Canaan, Connecticut. She is also survived by grandchildren, Michael, Ashley, Andy, Marshall, Will, Annie, and Liza. Ann was raised in Virginia Beach, and later attended The Madeira School, McLean, Virginia, and Sweet Briar College. Ann and Sonny married on November 7, 1952. Following Sonny's four years of active duty in the United States Navy, the Via's raised their family in Richmond and Virginia Beach, before retiring to Hob Knob Farm in 1985. Known for her active lifestyle, Ann enjoyed walking with her dogs, foxhunting, hunting rabbits on foot with beagles, gardening and traveling. When not engaged in these activities, she could be found on the sidelines of various athletic events supporting her children, grandchildren, or her beloved Virginia Cavaliers. Other interests included preservation, conservation, Virginia history and decorative arts. Together, Ann and Sonny enjoyed touring throughout the country and abroad in their antique automobiles. They were also avid followers and participants in the sport of steeplechasing. They are the proud owners of Good Night Shirt, two-time winner of the prestigious Eclipse Award and recent Inductee into The Virginia Steeplechase Hall of Fame. The family would like to thank loving caregiver and friend, Sharon Tate, for her support and devotion for the past 13 years. A memorial service for Ann will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Ivy, Virginia, at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 21, 2014.
