It strikes me as ironic reading about all this fuss about whether we should celebrate Thomas Jefferson’s birthday or not.

Ironic, because he himself did not want his birthday celebrated.

The following quote is taken from a letter from Jefferson to Levi Lincoln: “[D]isapproving myself of transferring the honours & veneration for the great birth-day of our republic, to any individual, or of dividing them with individuals, I have declined letting my own birthday be known, & have engaged my family not to communicate it.”
