The writer of “Civilians don’t need military weapons” in the Aug. 18 Daily Progress expresses an informed and, I believe, very intelligent opinion. Like the writer, I, as a Navy physician, had to deal with horrific, life-altering or life-ending assault-rifle wounds from Vietnam.

Certainly, no civilian needs such a weapon. It is designed for war, not for home protection or personal protection.
