Orange County High School hosted the Region 5A North Wrestling Tournament last Friday and Saturday, qualifying six Hornets for the State Tournament this weekend.
The Hornets qualified 13 for the Regional tournament after a strong performance the weekend prior at the Conference 16 Tournament—which the Hornets also hosted.
Chance Bowers (132) and Kaleb Marshall (182) each advanced to the championship match and both finished as regional runner-up Saturday.
Bowers opened with a pin of Potomac Falls’ Carlos Calderon and won a 13-4 major decision over Luke Munna (George C. Marshall) before pinning Broad Run’s Cameron Jackson to advance to the title match. There, he fell to Brooke Point’s Joseph Knight 14-4 in a major decision.
Marshall started his run by pinning Falls Church’s Jonah Baros. He then won an 8-5 decision over Elian Montoya of Broad Run before pinning Brooke Point’s Nathan Neverson and landing him in the championship match. There, he fell to top-seeded Chris Vasquez of Mountain View to finish second.
Dustin Shifflett (195) placed third for the Hornets. He started with a pin over Wakefield’s Daniel Donate-Perez and then beat Luke Fitzgerald (Potomac Senior) 8-2. In the semifinals, he fell to top seed Russ Pierce (Brooke Point) 6-2, sending him to the consolation bracket. There, he topped JEB Stuart’s Michael Dua 3-0 and faced Josh Taylor (Patrick Henry-Roanoke) in the third-place match. Shifflett won the match 6-3 to claim third.
Ryan Smith (106) earned a fourth-place finish Saturday. He pinned Broad Run’s Christian Credno and Wakefield’s Kowshik Barua, but lost to Potomac Senior’s Devin Sweeney in the semifinal match. In the consolation bracket, Smith pinned Brooke Point’s Bruno Alveres to advance to the third-place match. There, he fell to Briar Woods’ NjimMurshidi and finished fourth.
The Hornets qualified two more for the state tournament last weekend—Trent Carr (120) and Nick Benner (126) who both finished sixth.
Carr won his opening match 15-0 over Broad Run’s Salim Benkrane but lost in the quarterfinals to JEB Stuart’s Mohammad Awadallah. After a forfeit win in the consolation bracket, Carr won an 8-6 decision over Mark Barakat (Massaponax). After falling to Brooke Point’s Josh Montague, Carr faced Tuscarora’s Brendan Saul in the fifth-place match, but fell 4-2.
Benner opened with a 7-0 win over Broad Run’s Jacob Puterio but then lost to Kaz Gootee (Massaponax) 9-2, falling to the consolation bracket. There, he pinned JEB Stuart’s Rayyan Rehayem and Wakefield’s Steven Rochard before falling 6-0 to Matthew Muller (Patrick Henry-Roanoke). In the fifth-place match, he lost a 9-3 decision to Emmanuel Alfaro (North Stafford) to finish sixth.
Other Hornets who participated but did not place included: Jayden Joseph (113), Steven Tidman (138), David Steigler (145), Dylan Hale (152), Michael Jamerson (160) and Adam Wilkins (170).
The Virginia High School League State 5A and 6A Championships will be held this Friday-Saturday, Feb. 17-18, at at Oscar Smith High School.
