Orange County qualified six wrestlers for the State 5A meet this weekend at Oscar Smith High School in Chesapeake.
Four Hornets finished in third place and two more were fourth in the 5D Region Wrestling Tournament last weekend at the Hornet Sports Center in Orange.
The Hornets hosted the region’s 12 teams and finished fifth with 152.5 team points. Brooke Point (230.5) easily finished first, with Potomac Senior (189) second, Patrick Henry-Roanoke (177) third and Mountain View (176.4) fourth.
Ten Hornets finished among the top six, led by Nicky Benner (132), David Steigler (138), Chance Bowers (145) and Riley Rudnick (160) who each finished third. Blake Wilson (113) and Truth Wilson (220) were fourth. Jayden Joseph (120) was fifth, while Josh Benner (106), Dylan Hale (152) and Raymond Pierce (285) were sixth.
Nicky Benner won his first two matches by fall before dropping an 11-6 decision to regional runner-up Chauncey Wilson, sending him to the consolation bracket. There, he pinned Hunter Huddleston and Brenden Olszta to finish third.
After a bye, Steigler won his first match 11-2, but dropped his second 4-3 to eventual champion Steven Lang. In his first consolation match, Steigler won 17-11 before pinning Ricky Dorsch in the third-place match.
Bowers opened his tournament with a bye and a win by fall before falling to eventual runner-up Murtadha Kareem. In the consolation bracket, pinned Ronald Austin setting up a third-place match with Jose Jihad and Bowers pinned him to finish third.
Following an opening bye, Rudnick pinned Ryan Foutz, but fell to eventual runner-up A.J. Deutel 4-1. In the consolation bracket, he pinned Garnett Woody and won a 2-1 double-overtime decision over Robert Henderson to place third.
