Wheelchair basketball team stages free exhibition Sunday

Orange County Parks and Recreation (OCPR) will be hosting a wheelchair basketball doubleheader at the Hornet Sports Center Sunday, March 24.

The contest will feature the Virginia Sun Wheelers against the Harrisonburg Cardinals—a team comprised of players mostly from the Shenandoah Valley, but also featuring Orange County residents Jeff McDaniel and Tim Moubray. The Sun Wheelers are from the Virginia Beach area. Both teams play in Division III of the National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA).

In 2018, the Cardinals qualified for the NWBA National Tournament in Louisville as the fifth seed. With wins against the Triad Trackers and the Pittsburgh Steelwheelers, the Cardinals advanced to the tournament semifinals to face the top-seeded Connecticut Spokebenders and their 25-1 record. The Cardinals upset the Spokebenders and headed to the championship, but fell 44-42 to the RHI Pacers of Indianapolis. The Cardinals are taking a year off from national competition, but hope to make another run next year.

Game times for Sunday’s tournament are at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Admission is free. Everyone is invited to enjoy the action and support the athletes. For more information, contact OCPR at 672-5435.
