The Virginia men’s basketball team on Monday officially announced the signing of JUCO All-American guard Tomas Woldetensae.

Woldetensae, a native of Bologna, Italy, averaged 17.3 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game for Indian Hills Community College in 2018-19. The 6-foot-5, 195-pound guard shot 47 percent from the field and 47.6 percent from 3-point range for Indian Hills and was named the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference Player of the Year.

“We are excited to welcome Tomas into the Virginia men’s basketball family,” Coach Tony Bennett said in a release. “Tomas is a talented guard who is a complete player.”

Woldetensae could find immediate playing time on a Cavaliers team that will look different from last season’s NCAA Tournament champion group. Virginia will be without its three leading scorers from last season; guards Kyle Guy, De’Andre Hunter and Ty Jerome have all declared for the 2019 NBA Draft.

Virginia averaged 25 long-range attempts per game last season — the third highest mark in the ACC; Woldetensae could be in line for high-volume opportunities with Guy, Hunter and Jerome gone.

Indian Hills coach Kevin Plona said Woldetensae can catch and shoot, in addition to shooting off the dribble and off screens.

“He’s an elite level shooter,” Plona said.

He’s joining a team that already has multiple international players, including forward Francesco Badocchi (Milan, Italy), center Francisco Caffaro (Santa Fe, Argentina) and guard Kody Stattmann (Queensland, Australia). Forward Mamadi Diakite (Conakry, Guinea) has declared for the draft but left open the possibility of returning to UVa for his final year of eligibility.

In addition to Woldetensae, Virginia’s incoming class includes three freshmen: 4-star guard Casey Morsell, 4-star center Kadin Shedrick and 3-star forward Justin McKoy. UVa has two open scholarships remaining.
