Virginia forward Mamadi Diakite’s buzzer-beating shot against Purdue in the Elite Eight has been nominated for an ESPY award.
The shot, which forced overtime against the Boilermakers and helped the Cavaliers reach the Final Four for the first time since 1984 and eventually win the first national championship in program history, is nominated for the Best Play Award.
It is one of 16 nominees for the award, which is broken down by seeds and open for fan voting in a tournament style bracket. Diakite’s shot received the No. 14 seed in the bracket and is going against the No. 3 seed, which is Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry’s 99-yard touchdown run against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The top seed in the bracket is the Miami Dolphins’ last-second touchdown to beat the New England Patriots, while the No. 2 seed in Toronto Raptors guard Kawhi Leonard’s buzzer-beating shot in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference playoffs against the Philadelphia 76ers.
