The Charlottesville Tom Sox’s ninth-inning rally fell two runs short in a 6-4 road loss to the New Market Rebels on Wednesday night.
Charlottesville (6-3) lost its second straight game.
Trailing 6-3 heading to the top of the ninth, the Tom Sox narrowed the lead to two on Jake Talley’s RBI single with two outs but could get no closer.
Cayman Richardson finished with two hits and one run scored to lead the Tom Sox, who finished with eight hits.
Kyle Decker and Ramon Machado had two hits apiece for the Rebels (4-5), who used a three-run sixth inning to take command.
Kieran Casey took the loss for Charlottesville after walking three batters and giving up three earned runs in 1 1/3 innings of work.
