Virginia Director of Athletics Carla Williams told the Daily Progress on Monday that she is engaged in discussions with men’s basketball coach Tony Bennett about a possible contract extension.

Bennett led the Cavaliers to the first NCAA Tournament championship in program history this past season. In his 10 years at UVa, Bennett is 254-89 and has won four ACC regular season titles and two conference tournament titles.

Williams declined to offer specifics into the contract talks but did offer high praise for Bennett.

“He’s phenomenal,” Williams said. “I knew about him before I got here. I knew about his reputation, his character, his integrity and just being here and being able to work with him, he’s better than advertised, and I’ve said that before, he really is. So, yeah, we want him to be at Virginia for a long, long time.”

In 2015, Bennett signed a contract extension to stay at Virginia through April 30, 2021, with automatic one-year extensions kicking in on May 1, 2016, May 1, 2017 and May 1, 2018.

He then signed an amendment in 2017 that added another one-year extension for May 1, 2019, in addition to bumping his annual base salary from $400,000 to $500,000 and his annual supplemental compensation from $1.7 million to $2.5 million.

Virginia announced last week that football coach Bronco Mendenhall had agreed to a two-year extension through the 2024 season.

“Tony and Bronco are a joy to work with,” Williams said. “They care so much about the university and college athletics and doing it the right way.”
