As Jim Ryan’s tenure as the ninth president of the University of Virginia takes its first steps, the school is already moving toward the dawn of its third century. Ryan, a dedicated and decorated academic, will guide the university through the new century’s formative first years, setting the stage for UVa to grow and evolve in a rapidly changing global and national landscape.
Ryan faces challenges unique to
the times, including pressure to expand inclusiveness and respond
to historical ills and wrongs even while growing the school, which is the area’s largest employer. Opportunity, however, is born of challenge. We hope the following pages will illuminate Ryan’s plans to shepherd UVa toward an even brighter future.
